Filters 101

the counter human said these glasses will work fine !

Noticing a lot of customers using the wrong filter(s) lately; (air, oil, and hydraulic): not sure why, but the economy must have a part in this!

Here are a few facts about filters… first, size matters! Most air filters have to match exactly to seal properly. And I bet you didn’t know that a dirty air filter traps more dirt then a new, clean one! Indeed, if you are over-changing your air filters, or worse yet, blowing them out to clean them, then you are taking many hours of engine life away! A new paper air filter is about 90-92% efficient at trapping dirt. A dirty air filter is 97+%, and a filter you just blew out with compressed air and a blow gun is approx. 75% or less.

DO NOT over-maintain your air filter! Only change it when performance is hurt by it! As long as your engine performance is fine, then leave that dirty air filter in and run it… it’s stopping more dirt then a new one will!

Oil and hydraulic filters… thousands of dollars are spent here by customers that needed to change their filter on time! They don’t have the right filter, and the hour meter just clicked off another maintenance interval so they stop everything & go to their auto parts store to ask the counter expert (LMAO) if they have a cross-reference… 99% of the time all that matches is the threads… they have no idea about micron ratings or the type of media & valving of their filters (but hell, it screwed on, so it must be fine, right?) Wrong! And about $3,400 later when your tractor drives again, you may start to understand! And yes, the auto parts stores insurance will compensate most of the time… but that is only after you hire me as your expert when you take them to court!
